Garburator Repair & Installation

A garburator has one moving part and two seals, and that is where almost every problem starts. When something hard goes down the drain — a bone, a pit, a piece of glass — the motor jams and the unit hums without spinning. When the seal at the bottom wears out, water leaks from the unit into the cabinet below. When the mounting ring loosens, the whole unit vibrates and gets louder over time. A garburator that jams once can usually be freed and kept. A garburator that leaks or has started to corrode from the inside is usually worth replacing, because the parts that fail internally are not serviceable. We tell you which one you are dealing with before we do anything.

FAQ

My garburator hums but does not spin. Is it dead?

Usually not. That sound means the motor is getting power but the blades are jammed. A jam can often be cleared with the hex key on the bottom of the unit or with a plunger on the sink side. If it jams repeatedly, something is either worn inside the unit or the wrong things are going down the drain. We can clear the jam and tell you which situation you have.

Water is leaking from the bottom of my garburator. Can it be fixed?

No. A leak from the bottom of the unit means the internal seal has failed, and that seal is not replaceable on a standard garburator. The unit needs to be replaced. Leaks from the mounting ring or the drain connection above the unit are a different problem and can usually be repaired without replacing the garburator.

Do I need a garburator at all?

That is your call. A garburator makes food waste easier to deal with, but it also puts more material into the drain line, which can contribute to clogs over time. If your building or municipality restricts food waste in the drain, removing the unit and repiping the sink is a common alternative. We do both.

How long does a garburator installation take?

A standard removal and installation is usually under an hour. If the unit is being removed entirely and the sink needs to be repiped, the job takes longer.
