Washing Machine Installation & Repair

A washing machine connects to three things: hot water, cold water, and a drain. When any of those connections fails, the damage is immediate and expensive. The supply hoses sit under constant pressure, and when one bursts, it does not leak — it sprays. A rubber hose fails on a schedule, usually around the five-year mark, and a braided stainless hose lasts longer but still has a lifespan. The drain connection is the second most common failure point. A kinked or blocked drain hose backs water into the machine or onto the floor. The third is the shut-off valve behind the machine, which is often the original valve from when the house was built and has not been turned in years. We check all three before we connect a new machine, and we replace what needs replacing while we are already there.

FAQ

How often should I replace my washing machine supply hoses?

Every five years for rubber hoses, and every five to seven years for braided stainless. The hoses sit under constant pressure, and when they fail, they do not drip — they spray. A burst hose can put hundreds of litres of water into your laundry room in minutes. Replacing them on schedule is one of the cheapest preventive jobs in the house.

Can you install a washing machine I bought myself?

Yes. We install homeowner-supplied washers. We do not supply the machine itself, but we handle everything else: disconnecting the old unit, connecting the water supply lines, hooking up the drain, checking the shut-off valves, and testing for leaks.

My washing machine will not drain. Is it the machine or the drain?

Both are possible. If the drain hose is kinked, blocked, or installed too high, water stays in the drum. If the standpipe or the drain line itself is partially blocked, water backs up the same way. We check the hose and the drain connection first, because those are the most common causes and the easiest to fix.

The shut-off valves behind my washer will not turn. What now?

That is common in older homes. If the valve will not close fully, it needs to be replaced before a new washer is installed — otherwise, if the hose ever bursts, you cannot shut the water off. We replace the valves during the same visit as the washer installation.

How long does a washing machine installation take?

A standard removal and installation is usually one to two hours, depending on how accessible the water and drain connections are behind the machine.
