Laundry is the one room where plumbing failures cause the most damage in the shortest time. A washer supply hose sits under constant pressure, and when it fails, it does not leak — it sprays. The damage is usually measured in thousands of dollars, not hundreds. Two things prevent most of it. First, the hose itself: rubber hoses fail on a schedule, and stainless steel braided hoses last longer but still have a lifespan. Second, water hammer: every time the washer valve closes, it sends a shock wave through the pipes, and over years that loosens joints and wears fixtures elsewhere in the house. A water hammer arrestor absorbs that shock. Both are inexpensive parts, and both are worth installing when we are already there.
